About the Georgetown’s Animal Care and Use Program

Georgetown University’s Animal Care and Use Program is accredited by AAALAC.  The University initially received accreditation of its Animal Care and Use Program on February 9, 1979.  The University has maintained continuous AAALAC accreditation ever since.  This accreditation demonstrates the University’s commitment to responsible animal care and use. AAALAC performs triennial site visits to review and assess the Georgetown Animal Care and Use program. Georgetown had its last site visit in November 2023.

Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) & Animal Welfare Assurance

Institutions that receive PHS funds through a grant or contract are required to have an approved Assurance on file with OLAW. PHS funding components include NIH, CDC, FDA, BARDA, NASA, NSF and VA. Georgetown University’s Animal Welfare Assurance, number is D16-00181 (A3282-01), was reviewed and approved by the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare and became effective on July 27, 2020. The Assurance will expire on July 31, 2024 (currently under review).

Note: OLAW does not oversee research activities funded by DOD, USDA, non- profit or for-profit organizations. DOD funded research must be reviewed by the GU IACUC and ACURO prior to starting any animal work or implementing any changes.

USDA Registration​

The Georgetown University is registered with the United States Department of Agriculture as a Class R Research Facility under the Animal Welfare Act (7 U.S.C. 2131 et seq.)​.  The University’s registration certificate number is 10-R-0004 (Customer No. 69).
